The 808 telephone area code covers the inhabited and developed areas of the Hawaiian Islands out to Midway Island. 808 was issued as Hawaii's area code shortly after its statehood in 1959.

Telephone communications to and from Wake Island are connected through Hawaii, and therefore also use the 808 area code.

Slightly over 1.3 million people live in Hawaii, and one area code is expected to cover the region's needs for the foreseeable future.
